The Wound Healing Center at Trumbull Memorial Hospital to Host Community Health Talk on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

(WARREN– MARCH 22, 2017) The Wound Healing Center at Trumbull Memorial Hospital is hosting a free community health talk on Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) therapy on Wednesday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Howland Library, located at 9095 East Market Street in Warren. Snacks and refreshments will be provided at the event.

Board-certified general surgeon, Rao Sudheendra, MD, will discuss HBO therapy, how it works and who benefits from treatment.

During HBO therapy the body is exposed to 100 percent oxygen at a pressure that is greater than what the body normally experiences. Wounds need oxygen to heal properly and exposing them to 100% oxygen can in many cases, speed up the healing process. During treatment, the patient watches TV or talks to others while relaxing on a bed with a large see-through plastic shell. A typical treatment lasts an average of two hours. This includes 90 minutes at the prescribed treatment level, plus the time it takes to pressurize and then depressurize the chamber.

The average number of treatments required to heal a patient with a wound is 20 to 40, but this varies from patient to patient. People suffering from diabetic foot ulcers, bone infections, chronic non-healing wounds, delayed radiation injuries and compromised skin grafts may benefit from HBO therapy. The event is free, but registration is required. To register for the community health talk call, 330-841-6500. Dr. Sudheendra is an independent member of the Medical Staff at Trumbull Memorial Hospital and the Director of the Wound Healing Center.
